I refer to this book often to remember what he says about literature, art, music and the Gospel Arthur Henry King, a British poet, writer, lecturer, and academic, taught in the English Department at BYU for several years He saw everything in the arts and in history through the gospel lens He was converted by the Joseph Smith pamphlet the missionaries gave him He wrote, When Joseph Smith describes his visions, he describes them not as a man who feels that he has to make the effort to persuade He simply states what happened to him, and he does it in a way that gives it credence I am in this church because of the Joseph Smith story p 25 I m declaring this my Book of the Year pick for 2008 The Abundance of the Heart would serve as a perfect foundation upon which to build a complete curriculum of gospel centric education Imminently qualified as a classical scholar of the British realm, King expounds with strong opinion about all aspects of what SHOULD be taught, what SHOULD be studied, what SHOULD be learned, by the humble and scholarly alike, and which, alas, is lost to most of modern upbringing and schooling, irrespective of one s social class or alma mater He brings an uncommon wealth of personal experience and knowledge to bear with amazing spiritual insight, subtley encouraging the reader to tread near forgotten paths to personal refinement Having once had the privilege of studying the scriptures under him, it was refreshing to me, even exhilirating, to be re exposed to his depth of understanding, the expanse of his view, and the power of his profound faith Read this book See if it doesn t change your world See if your reading habits don t push into exciting new and old territory. This is a marvelous piece of writing by one of the great LDS scholars King s point of view is unique, having come to Mormonism late in life as an accomplished English Literature scholar He discusses the connections between religion and art in a way that I found enormously meaningful He talks about how it s only through revealed and true religion that we can see art correctly He is free with his opinion and is willing to ruffle some feathers He suggests that children should only play with metal and wood toys instead of plastic ones he favors original pieces of art to prints and he is extremely critical of LDS wedding traditions But if you re interested in a really outspoken and beautiful point of view, this is the book for you. A wonderful guide to living the life of the mind while striving to live by the Spirit. A missionary in reverse A truly educated man from england who converted to the LDS church and had much to teach us about our religion.
