Every romantic genre has its tropes This novel plumbs one that I d like to call My Best Friend s Guy Gal In the case of MBFG, a main character MC has been secretly pining for that elusive target for most of his her life But said target fell a long time ago for the best friend or it could be a sister, brother, favorite cousin, et al So the main character has had to nurse a lonely heart Others may know about this unrequited affection Sometimes the target knows about it, sometimes not But then the obstacle falls away and the target is left alone again Good news, right No, not really The target may have been genuinely in love with the primary source of affection and devastated by the loss, leaving the MC to wonder if he she should make a move Surely no one would think it amiss if emotional comfort is extended to the hurt target Ah, but the MC wants the target to reciprocate the heretofore unrequited affection and hopes that love may come trotting along if enough companionship, sprinkled with heaping doses of passionate, no holds barred sex, is offered But the target is wounded and warns that love simply isn t in the cards So the main character pretends that sex is enough, that the target doesn t have to feel what the main character feels and that the sex needn t spoil their already existing relationship It needn t be anything than wild sexual encounters and they can just both walk away afterwards without awkwardness ensuing Right Wrong So very very wrong We know it, the other characters know it, practically everyone else around them knows it A strong sense of self delusion is necessary for the main character to think that only sex can be offered and taken and matters can carry on as before This self delusion is what prompts such tropes and can make for painful reading We know that it will all end in tears But the characters prod each other along, each pretending that nothing s going on except mind blowing sexual ecstasy with no deeper emotions attached.People, we ve been down this road before now We tried wife swapping, key parties, swinging and open marriages They were fads that passed away except for a few die hard swingers and truly sexually adventurous people Most folks don t want to share their partners with anyone, not even a memory So we know that such behavior is doomed from the start at least in reality But romantic novels have little to do with reality They re about fantasy and happy endings in spite of experience, intelligence and common sense. So what makes this story special Well, the heroine, for one thing She s not some chuckle headed, delusional miss She s feisty, low class, tough, spirited and wild in bed and out of it Kentucky Lee is the girl your dad warned you about and she s not ashamed of it She fixes, details and repairs automobiles and rides a Harley When she rides with Sean, he lets her drive Outstanding So when she makes her pitch, Kentucky knows what she s offering and what she s getting in return Believe it or not, she s thought it through and realizes it might hurt She s ready for the pain of loss she s experienced enough of it in her life The target, one Sean Dryden, has had doubts about his relationship with his chosen amour, the dead Lynnie James, a golden girl and cheerleader His lifestyle would have led him away from her and he knows it The two MCs have to struggle past their own feelings of guilt and hunger to arrive at a solution to the changes in their feelings as the sex gets under way three bouts of it in the first hundred pages. These aren t two stupid feckless teenagers They re adults and they both have to come to grips with their altered circumstances and possible futures together These are two complicated people and the road to their joyous ending is fraught with worry, terror, guilt, shame, argument and concern It s heady stuff and makes for a mature romance than some of the MBFGs you might read. This made for a quick HOT HOT did I mention HOT read First time reading Sara Arden, and it will NOT be my last In the beginning of the book I admit that I had some hard feelings towards Sean I hate the cavalier way men have of taking one look at women and immediately knowing that what she is offering is motivated by MORE than the WORDS she is actually saying Thereby sensing her vulnerability and moving right in for the KILL He knows she is in love with him Even when she claims to only want to use sex as a healing balm with no strings attached So rather than do the honourable thing and just stay old friends, he has sex with her anyway And not once, in a fit of bad judgement But repeatedly Each time acknowledging to himself that her feeling ARE invested, and she will be UNDOUBTABLY crushed when he struts out of her life for good Ok So Clearly I m over that snippet, because it did not affect my 5 Star rating Yay Oh ya, did I mention that the book was HOT I might as well toss in the MOST SHOCKINGLY Dirty Hot SCENE that I ve evvvverrr seen in print Such a guilty pleasure Starts on Pg.87 He pushed his hand through her damp hair Like that, do you Yeah, me too I want to know what we taste like together Just as he d promised, when she was riding his fingers and arching up into her orgasm, he broke away and slammed his mouth into hers Phew And then of course we see how vulnerable Sean is, just when Kentucky slips into a place of reckoning She becomes self reliant and guarded Our allegiance changes as we champion for Sean s causes all of the sudden Desperately hoping that as he doggedly purses her, he breaks down her defences and they live happily ever after This story had so many feels in it that it was an emotional roller coaster I laughedI cried.it just completely ran the gambit of it all From the very first moment that we are introduced to Sean Kentucky it was obvious that they belonged together They were each other s future even if they weren t sure about it themselves I think everyone around them was I felt drawn to the pain and insecurity that each of them felt They were both such amazing characters, so full of life and love to give to each other I felt that one wasn t whole without the other To use a corny phrase, they truly completed each other I think that s why they had such a history, because even if they weren t ready for it their souls knew that they were supposed to be together. This book is so well written that you really are right there with Kentucky and Sean as they discover each other an in that discovery they truly find themselves. Good book it only took me a couple of hours to finish it. This story had so many feels in it that it was an emotional roller coaster I laughedI cried.it just completely ran the gambit of it all From the very first moment that we are introduced to Sean Kentucky it was obvious that they belonged together They were each other s future even if they weren t sure about it themselves I think everyone around them was I felt drawn to the pain and insecurity that each of them felt They were both such amazing characters, so full of life and love to give to each other I felt that one wasn t whole without the other To use a corny phrase, they truly completed each other I think that s why they had such a history, because even if they weren t ready for it their souls knew that they were supposed to be together. This book is so well written that you really are right there with Kentucky and Sean as they discover each other an in that discovery they truly find themselves. Sean and Kentucky are two lost souls searching for acceptance and love after the death of their BFF, Sean s wife Can Sean get over his past and love his wife s bestie Can Kentucky betray the memory of her best friend and survive Sean s secret This has to be my favorite set of characters of Sara Arden s The writing is so vivid and descriptive I felt as if I were Kentucky every step of the way I fell in love with her and broken Sean I laughed, cried, and yelled at the book to the point I woke my sleeping toddler don t worry he fell back asleep after admonishing me.This was a quick beach or travel read but be careful if you don t like to laugh out loud or tear up in public. Wow so many feels anguish, guilt and sadness, but also lots of appreciation, love and romance, great friends, emotional healing and self acceptance and of course steamy sex Much heavier story than most Blaze books, but this book had depth and wonderful characters Loved it 5 Stars I didn t get into this at all, while initially it captured my interest once they got together and then Sean went on a mission, I lost all interest Largely because the romance lost its momentum and the rest just seemed to be padded out with his recovery and all of Kentucky s insecurities For someone who has lived with a no fear attitude she sure vacillated a lot, to the point where I was just bored with it.
